What Are Peptides and What Do They Do for Your Skin?
If you've been anywhere near the skincare aisle lately, you've probably seen the word "peptide" plastered across half the bottles. But what are they actually doing, and why i have decided to built my entire first product around them?
Peptides are small chains of amino acids, basically tiny building blocks of protein. Your skin naturally uses them to produce collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin firm and bouncy. The problem is, as we age, our natural peptide and collagen production slows right down, which is a big part of why skin starts to lose firmness and fine lines appear. Feeding the skin extra peptides topically is essentially giving it a nudge, a signal to keep producing and repairing.
Now, not all peptides do the same job, so let's go through the specific ones.
First up, Argireline, also known as Acetyl Hexapeptide-8. This is the one people call "Botox in a bottle," and there's actually some real science behind the nickname. It mimics part of a protein involved in muscle contraction signals, the same pathway Botox targets, so it helps relax the look of expression lines, think forehead lines and crow's feet, without needles.
Then there's Copper Tripeptide, which works differently. It's more about supporting the skin's natural repair process and encouraging firmness, so it pairs nicely with Argireline rather than overlapping with it.
Nonapeptide-1 joins the two by also targeting fine lines and elasticity, rounding out what's sometimes called a peptide complex, where several peptides work on slightly different mechanisms at once rather than relying on just one.
Supporting all of that, you'll usually find niacinamide for tone and texture, hyaluronic acid for hydration, and vitamin E as an antioxidant to protect the skin barrier.
In terms of actually using a peptide serum, the simple version is, cleansed skin, a few drops of serum, morning and evening, before your moisturizer. Consistency matters more than quantity here, peptides work gradually over weeks, not overnight.
